I came across this post after I had been directed by my spirit guide to read up on the subject of the shadow aspect of our personality. I found it especially helpful as I have only recently begun to admit to myself that I am experiencing depression following the loss of my son, and the more recent separation from my grandson. For the past few weeks I have been contemplating exactly what is being asked of me at this time, what is it that I am being asked to learn. And I understand from your post, that I am being asked to learn to let go of what I perceive as my way forward and to embrace what is.

Thank you very much for this perspective.

Because of where you are the dream seems to be dealing with your conscious life, rather than the unconscious. There is something that you need to discharge, but you cannot find an outlet.

You have made attempts but cannot find anywhere suitable to relieve yourself.

Consider your circumstances in real life, and see if you can find any parallel to the situation in your dream, and work out some outlet to relieve yourself of the build up of waste which is dominating your efforts.

No the state of depression I'm referring to is one and the same.
I should add that I've had little success in treating depression when antidepreesant medication is involved.
I agree that depression is an illness, but like other illnesses it also serves as a passage. Try to get hold of the new book, 'The Gods as Diseases'.

I'm wondering if you are mistaking depression for something else. We all feel down in life or melancholy which yes, may help us reach deep inside ourselves for insight.

However having experienced depression for half my life, I have only experienced pain and lethargy. I find it difficult to feel motivated to do anything, I want to turn the world off, sometimes I just want to die and guess what? I have no control whatsoever over those feelings because depression is an illness.

If I do not take medication during depressive episodes I can barely function. Therefore I find it strange that anyone could find something positive in such a debilitating condition.

You describe depression in a similar vein to some kind of shamanic journey. However, the shaman purposefully enters the spirit world and is in control of where and when and how they do that. Someone with depression does not and I can't imagine anyone wanting to go into a depressive state in order to bring back something from this underworld.

Many people with depression, if not most, feel hopeless and powerless. They wake up and just want to go back to sleep or die. The world is a drab, joyless place that is too painful to contemplate. Someone suffering from depression cannot, like a shaman, willfully come back from that darkness and may kill themselves.

Depression fills you with crippling and overwhelming emotions that can become unbearable and some cope with those feelings through alcohol, drugs, sex or self harm. Self disgust perpetuates an ever decreasing self destructive cycle.

I'm assuming you've never been diagnosed with depression so therefore see something positive to be gained from it.

Hi Katherine,

Are you familiar with totem animals? It *could* be possible (of course, up for your intrepretation and judgement) that rabbits represent various things. Native Americans felt that rabbit totem medicine includes moving through fear, living by one's own wits, receiving hidden teachings and intuitive messages, quick thinking, strengthening intuition, and paradox. Rabbit also represents humility, because he is quiet and soft and not self-asserting. Rabbit reminds us not to be afraid. Fearful thoughts reproduce (like rabbits) and bring the very thing we fear. Rabbit people are so afraid of tragedy, illness, and disaster, that they call those very fears to them to teach them lessons. If you see Rabbit or in any way feel attracted to him, it may be telling you to wait for the forces of the universe to start moving again, to stop worrying and to get rid of your fears. It always indicates a need to re-evaluate the process you are undergoing, to rid yourself of any negative feelings or barriers, and to be more humble.

*This totem may also bring a need to examine the kinds of foods you eat.
Perhaps a vegetarian diet, if only for a short time, can help you strengthen and heal. (helpful note: this helped me loose weight and get healthier)

*If a Rabbit totem has appeared in your dream, it may indicate a need for more planning or to check those plans already set in motion.

Please let me know if you would like to email me. You shouldn't feel alone because you are not alone. :)

Hi Katie

A few thoughts here. An old building will often represent older and deeper aspects of yourself. Here you meet the strangers, that is the unknown, unexplored aspects of yourself. In the dream you learn of their stories. This would reflect a growing awareness of your many selves.

Bathrooms typically appear when you are processing your 'stuff'. A dirty bathroom is reflective of a backlog of shadow work - its a common theme. Given that the bathroom appears dirtier each time you enter, this would suggest that your in the process of realising your shadow to an increasing degree. So begins the process. In alchemy this is the nigredo. Once your work on the shadow, the bathroom becomes clear, and returns to whiteness, the albedo.

I'm not sure what the old woman who is eating the child would symbolise. A dead child, can be a lost and forgotten aspiration. That is, some new potential that did not survive. The old woman has the feeling of being monotonous in her nature, so maybe you need to think where your life has become routine like (a shadow element of the feminine).

Your thoughts?
